Zambian Election update- Zambian Election Update- The Zambians went out to vote today but not in their large numbers. There are fears of voter apathy amid allegations of rigging and the lack of credibility in the electoral commission of Zambia (ECZ). in more than 6 polling stations i visited in the morning, only a few people had started to exercise their right despite most polling stations in Lusaka opening on time. so far there are no reports of any forms of violence as police are out in full force. EU election observers were also seen moving around polling stations. we are going in for the second round up to Chilanga 25 kilometres along Kafue road. will keep you posted on the Zambian elections
A police man has been killed in Kanyama constituency
North of Lusaka town and 3 were also injured during police clashes with
demonstrators.There are allegations that some ballot papers were already
stuffed into ballot boxes before the station opened. Violence broke out after
more than 50 people were turned away when polling agents claimed they had voted
before whilst in actual fact had not done so. Police had to fire tear gas to
disperse the protest. Before the elections there were concerns from the civil
society about the preparedness of Zambia in hosting the tripartite elections.
The opposition, Patriotic front has threatened to reject poll results if they
don't go their way. We went to Chilanga after lunch and people were reluctantly
coming in and also in Linda compound, 2km from Makeni, Jehovah's witness members
gathered to oppose the hosting of elections. Most polling stations have closed
now and Hill View Hotel polling center was one of the few which will be closing
later. The President, Rupiah Banda and opposition leader, Michael Sata from
(PF), had voted by 1000hrs this morning and there were no reports on Hakainde
Hichilema from the opposition UPND. There are fears of violence once the
results start tripping in. Counting has started in various polling stations and
only seven were still open by news time. There are 10 candidates contesting the
